Black Friday’s 74% parcel surge puts Europe’s delivery promises under pressure
Last updated:
Eindhoven, 22 October 2026 – Black Friday week will be the busiest of the 2026 peak season, with parcel volumes 74% above an average week, according to Sendcloud’s forecast. That is close to last year’s +72%, but the average week keeps growing.
The pressure doesn’t end on Friday. Sendcloud expects Cyber Monday (30 November) to be the busiest single day again, as in previous years, because parcels ordered over Black Friday weekend are processed that Monday. Cyber Monday week comes in at +68%, and volumes stay more than 55% above average through 20 December.

Delivery slips every peak, and retailers carry the delay
A peak of this size lands on carriers first. Sendcloud platform data shows that delivery performance dips across November and December each year, especially around Cyber Week and the run-up to Christmas, as carriers tighten capacity and networks run close to their limits. Across Europe, about half of parcels took longer than a day to arrive in December 2025, against about 4 in 10 in October. For a retailer that promised next-day delivery, that gap is where the promise breaks.
The promise is made at checkout, weeks before the parcel moves. A delivery date that looked safe in October can be out of reach by mid-December. Retailers that keep offering their fastest option all season, without adjusting as the networks fill up, are the most exposed. The shopper may never see the carrier’s name, but they see the retailer’s, and when a promise breaks, retailers pay for it.
One late parcel can cost the next sale
According to Sendcloud’s 2026 E-commerce Delivery Compass, a consumer survey across Europe, nearly 1 in 3 shoppers (29.06%) did not reorder after a single delivery problem. Peak season is also gift season, and a parcel with a date attached carries more weight than a regular order.
Shoppers don’t ask for the fastest option as often as retailers might think. According to the same survey, 26.56% say on-time delivery separates acceptable from great, ahead of fast delivery at 19.72%.
“There are three simple things retailers can do this season to reduce the impact. First, promise only what you can keep. A realistic delivery date that arrives on time beats a fast one that doesn’t. Second, have a plan B ready, whether that’s another carrier or out-of-home delivery methods at checkout, in case the network you rely on gets blocked. Third, if something goes wrong, react in time and tell your customers. Bad news is easier to take than silence.” – Rob van den Heuvel, CEO and Co-founder of Sendcloud

Sendcloud’s Post-Purchase Solution, now available in the tools your team already uses
Most retailers leave post-purchase on default, letting carrier notifications and out-of-the-box tracking emails speak for the brand. Sendcloud's Post-Purchase Solution changes that: delivery events now flow straight into the tools your team already uses, like Gorgias, Zendesk, Freshdesk and Klaviyo, turning tracking updates into branded touchpoints, proactive support alerts, and automated claims, no matter which carrier or platform you ship with.
