How Wurmkiste ships apartment composting systems from the countryside
Wurmkiste builds composting systems for apartments. The boxes are made of wood and look like stools; inside, compost worms eat the organic waste a household produces and turn it into worm humus, also known as black gold.
The idea came to David Witzeneder when he moved to Vienna to study and found that most of the city has no organic waste bins, so everything ends up in residual waste. Wurmkiste grew out of that.
CHALLENGE
Selling to the city while staying in the countryside
To keep living in the countryside and still sell Wurmkisten to people in Vienna, Berlin, Munich and beyond, the company moved into online retail. What it lacked was a proper shipping solution.
The product adds its own demands: a Wurmkiste is a living ecosystem, so fruit flies and occasionally mould cannot be ruled out entirely. Careful handling matters, which makes the customer relationship, and the delivery that starts it, worth getting right.
SOLUTION
Addresses and labels, generated automatically
Sendcloud came in and has been a big help ever since. Addresses and labels are now generated automatically, which saves tedious typing and, above all, time. The price of the shipping tool is unbeatable for Wurmkiste, and when a shipment does run into trouble, a good support team is there to help.
RESULTS
Shipping that lets the business stay where it is
With shipping handled, Wurmkiste can stay in the countryside and still reach customers in the cities. It also runs regular workshops where customers assemble and personalise their own box and get an introduction to looking after it.
A recommendation to other retailers
Wurmkiste would put Sendcloud in front of any other online retailer.
