  • Find your own place after the first month 
  • If you are from outside the EU, you will need to bring your legislated and translated birth certificate (as well as for of your partner and/or children) when you get registered at the Expat centre

Eindhoven is a city bursting with energy, and we are glad to share it with you. When you google ‘innovation’, it is no coincidence that the first images you find are light bulbs. Over 125 years ago, Philips brought light to Eindhoven. The company transformed the city into a vibrant industrial success story.

Nowadays, Eindhoven is a bustling city in transition, with a constant flow of new developments in the fields of creativity, innovation, technology, design and knowledge. The rapid growth of tech companies like ASML, Philips (and Sendcloud!) have made Eindhoven a diverse and international city, with big events like Dutch Design Week and light art festival Glow attracting people from over the world.

Some people will call Eindhoven a small city, some people will call it a big town. It has a certain cosiness, even though it has been growing rapidly in the last few years, having created an interesting mix of industrial and modern architecture. Everything is close to each other which makes the city very easily accessible. Go and explore!

All sorts of things might pop into your head when thinking about our little country. And most of ‘m – we must admit, are just plain true. Have some cheese!

We might have our quirks, but most importantly we’re proud to be a well-organised country with a good social and healthcare system and, according to the 2019 OECD Better Life Index, the Netherlands is the best country in the world for managing their work-life balance. Lekker!

Immigrating from outside of the EU?

Residence permit

If you’re immigrating from outside of the EU, we will need to request a residence permit for you as a highly skilled migrant. In order to qualify for this permit, you need to meet certain requirements:

  • You have an employment contract with an employer or research institution in the Netherlands. This employer is a recognised sponsor by the IND (which Sendcloud is). 
  • You are going to earn sufficient income.
  • The agreed wage is in accordance with market conditions.

Salary criteria 2020

Highly skilled migrants 30 years or older€4,612 gross per month
Highly skilled migrants younger than 30 years€3,381 gross per month
Reduced salary criterion€2,423 gross per month
European Blue Card€5,403 gross per month 

The age-dependent salary criterion applies for as long as you continue working for one and the same employer, even after becoming 30 years old. What if you start working for another employer? Then the new employer should pay the salary criterion that applies for your age at that moment.

The exception to this rule applies if you fall under the reduced salary criterion. This low criterion also remains in effect when you subsequently change employers. The reduced salary criterion is not age dependent. Find more on the reduced salary criterion here.

The immigration process (non-EU)

If you are from outside of the EU and you qualify for a residence permit as a highly skilled migrant, we will start the application for your residence permit after you sign the contract.

Immigrating as an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen?

A valid passport is enough

If you have the nationality of an EU/EEA Member State or Switzerland, you don’t need a residence permit or TWV to live and work in the Netherlands. You won’t have to report to the IND either.

A valid passport or ID-card (issued by an EU/EEA Member State or Switzerland) shows that you have lawful stay and that you are allowed to work.

Family members with a different nationality

If your family member has a different nationality, you have to be registered at the IND with the form ‘Registration for EU-citizens (proof of entitlement to residency status)’. Or you need to have a valid residence document.

To live and work in the Netherlands, your family member must apply for a residence document based on EU law.

How does COVID-19 influence your immigration?

Basic rules for everyone

Please read the basic rules with regard to Dutch measures against the coronavirus on our Government website.

Coming from inside the EU

If you are an EU citizen, the effects of COVID-19 on your immigration process will mainly be limited to a possible quarantine of 10 days when you arrive in the Netherlands.

By filling in your country (in Dutch) on NederlandWereldwijd.nl you can check if this will be the case for you. In general, you won’t need to go in quarantine if your area is green or yellow. You will have to go in quarantine if your area is orange or red. We  advise you to try and translate the information shared on your country since it could state something different despite the colour.

Coming from outside of the EU

If you are coming from outside of the EU, your situation depends on your regional corona restrictions. Things you should consider that could slow down the process:

  • If you need to get legalised documents, the local government or the Dutch embassy should be open and accessible
  • To get the MVV stamp in your passport, the Dutch embassy should be open and accessible 
  • There should be flight possibilities to the Netherlands 

If due to regional corona restrictions one of the above is temporarily not possible, we advise to decide upon your starting date with us until it’s clear when all of the above will be accessible again.
